Ever opened a quilt pattern and thought, “Wait… what does that mean?”

Quilt patterns are a fantastic way for beginners to get started — all the math, cutting measurements, and construction steps are already figured out for you. But if you’re new to quilting, the terminology can feel like a foreign language, and pattern writers sometimes assume you already know the basics.

In this class, we’ll take the mystery out of reading patterns.

We’ll focus on both quilt and bag patterns (no garment patterns in this one!) and break down the common terms, abbreviations, and instructions so you can follow any pattern with confidence. I’ll walk you through real examples and guide you step-by-step so you get hands-on practice interpreting pattern directions.

Have a pattern sitting at home that’s left you scratching your head? Bring it along! We’ll help you decode it so you can finally get started.
